Dividing Sarracenia

Categories: Pitcher Plant Care
Tags: Sarracenia, Care, Dividing

At some point, pitcher plants need to be repotted and/or divided. Plants that reach the pot edge will continue to grow underground. Many times plants will burst the pot, a testament to their hardiness and strength.

Steps:

  1. Remove the plant from the pot either turning upside down or cutting the pot away from the plant.
  2. Clean and untangle root ends.
  3. Roots just below the upper plant may have wound around the plant. Carefully untangle these roots.
  4. Evaluate how many divisions can be made from the rhizome.
  5. If possible, pull apart or break the sections; otherwise, use a knife to cut the pieces apart.
  6. Untangle the roots while gently pulling the divisions apart.
  7. Clean each division of old growth and pot in appropriate size pot.
  8. Label.
